Have you seen, heard or read something interesting lately?
Tip your editors In France, when they catch you spewing hate speech, you could serve jail time. That's the possibility recently fired Dior creative director John Galliano is facing after getting caught on video making anti-Semitic remarks to some bar patrons in Paris. Not only did he get fired, (which does happen here), but he has to stand trial and could face up to six months in jail.
This is in stark contrast to the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision that the Westboro Baptist Church, (which is comprised of one crazy family and is not a real church), has the right under the First Amendment to spew hate speech at homosexuals and anybody else they choose outside a military funeral. While we loathe the ideas presented by the bigots in each respective incident, we have to admit we agree that when you start jailing people for words, you get into the very territory you were trying to avoid by squelching their hate speech in the first place.
