Why Britain loses the Eurovision Style Contest. Brit women MP's A bunch of middle aged Scrubbers. Are OZ Dolly Pollies the Brown Paper Bag Brigade.

Meet the Zapettes and the Sarkozettes - a new breed of female politician who make our lot look like the first ladies of frump.
When that master of vitriol Gore Vidal decreed that "politics is showbusiness for ugly people", he was spot on. But today there is a new wave of female politicians who seem intent on demonstrating the exact opposite.

In the front line: Harriet Harman
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Spanish prime minister, posed with his glamorous new cabinet this week - the first time a European government has included more women than men.
Add to that the much-lauded French ministerial line-up - so chic they've been dubbed the Sarkozettes - while in Italy, new prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's prospective cabinet could be said to resemble a Hugh Hefner harem.
And in Britain, well, we have Hapless Harriet, Jacqui "Too Much Home Front" Smith, and Tessa the Trainspotter. Isn't it time that our women politicians got a grip and made for the makeover?
"But they're not there to look good," whine the PC brigade. "They are there to do their job." And in Britain, unlike the rest of Europe, the two are mutually exclusive.
Of course our own bunch of middle aged bimbo's who represent us Aussie voters who always get sucked in by their 'Hopefully this and hopefully that which is replaced by a blas'e can't be done mate the the other mob left us a dry kitty. Only one comes to mind as a person well worth a trundle in the boudoir; the remainder- well what do you reckon? Do you fancy any of the ugly ones or are you quite happy to use a brown paper bag on the political old bag of your choice?Remember pollies are fair game, honesty is not their policy, money sucking is. (I said sucking)
Vest. Have a sucking good weekend.

Working Class Hero

by John Lennon
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and class less and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Cops kill spirit to keep torch burning
17 Apr 2008, 1830 hrs IST,PTI

NEW DELHI: The Olympic torch run has ended peacefully, with tennis players Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi carrying it to the India Gate in the Capital.

The truncated run that lasted for about 40 minutes was smooth and incident free. The torch will leave for Bangkok later on Thursday. ( Watch )

The ace tennis duo, who took over the torch from former Olympian Randhir Singh, together lit the Olympic cauldron at the India Gate bringing an end to the traditional ceremony which kept security personnel on tenterhooks.

Guarded by as many as 17,000 security personnel, the Beijing Olympic torch was taken through a 2.3 km stretch in the national Capital on Thursday with Tibetans protesting in various places in the country.

For over five hours, the majestic Rajpath was turned into a security fortress with the Prime Minister's office and Ministries of Defence, External Affairs and Finance lining the torch route from Rashtrapati Bhavan shut down.

With a three-layered security ring akin to Republic Day arrangements in place, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit handed over the Olympic flame to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi after it was lit by vice-chairman of Beijing Olympics Organising Committee Jiang Yu with the imposing Rashtrapati Bhavan forming the backdrop.

'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh, one of India's greatest athletes, had the honour to lead the relay before the torch changed hands with nearly 70 celebrities including sportsmen, film stars and politicians taking short runs culminating at the India gate.

Sportspersons Aslam Sher Khan, Dhanraj Pillay, Zafar Iqbal, Wilson Cherian, Khazan Singh, K Kunjurani, Bishen Singh Bedi were among others who took part in the event. The tinsel industry was represented by Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan.
( Watch )

Sprint Queen P T Usha, former Olympic bronze medalist weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari and world shooting champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu also took part in the relay.

Para Olympian Rajinder Singh Rahelu, who was on a wheelchair, was also among those who carried the torch which was kept at a five star hotel overnight after it was brought from Islamabad amid tight security.

Barricades were put all along the Rajpath to thwart any attempts by Tibetans to sneak in. Barbed wire fences were put up outside the heavily guarded Chinese Embassy, which was targeted by Tibetan protestors in recent weeks.

Delhi police commandos dressed in red and blue tracksuits were joined by Chinese security guards in providing close security cover and flanked the runners who passed on the flame after running a few metres.

Around 60 Tibetans were detained as they attempted to block roads and entered into minor clashes with police in various parts of the city. 30 Tibetan protestors also tried to barge into the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Mild force, including baton charging, was used to disperse them. ( Watch )

The public was kept out and all the access roads to the historic stretch was cut off for several hours to ensure a smooth passage of the torch relay which was earlier plagued by disruptions in London, San Francisco and Paris.

US society to blame for child abuse: Pope
18 Apr 2008, 0037 hrs IST,AGENCIES

WASHINGTON: Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday chided Americans for a moral breakdown he said had fueled the church’s child sex abuse scandal.

Pope Benedict, celebrating a stadium mass for 45,000 people, acknowledged that the United States pedophile priests scandal caused "indescribable pain and harm" to victims but asked Catholics to love their pastors.

"No words of mine can describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse," he said in the sermon of a mass at Nationals Park, a new stadium hosting its first non-baseball event.

In a speech delivered before the mass, the pontiff berated the bishops for their poor handling of a scandal surrounding sexual abuse of children in the church. But he urged efforts "to address the sin of abuse within the wider context of sexual mores" as well as a reassessment of "the values underpinning society".

"What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today?" the pontiff said.

"Children deserve to grow up with a healthy understanding of sexuality and its proper place in human relationships. They should be spared the degrading manifestations and the crude manipulation of sexuality so prevalent today."

Bush poaches Benedict's best-known lines

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in a dramatic surprise, held an emotional and tearful meeting on Thursday with victims of sexual abuse by priests, consoling them and promising them his prayers.

The 25-minute meeting, believed to be the first time a pope has met with victims of sexual abuse by the clergy, took place in the chapel of the Vatican's embassy and was kept secret until after it was over.

The encounter dramatically capped three days of comments the pope has made expressing shame about the scandal that has rocked the U.S. Church.

"They prayed with the Holy Father, who afterward listened to their personal accounts and offered them words of encouragement and hope," a Vatican statement said. "His holiness assured them of his prayers for their intentions, for their families and for all victims of sexual abuse."

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the archbishop of Boston, the city where the scandal first broke in 2002, accompanied the group, which a Vatican source said was made up of about a half a dozen middle-aged men and women.

Chief Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said there was a lot of emotion in the room and some of the victims cried. Each victim then chatted personally with the pope.

Benedict spoke "affectionate words" to the group and Cardinal O'Malley gave the pope a notebook with the names of about 1,000 sexual abuse victims in the Boston archdiocese, so that the pope could pray for all of them, Lombardi said.

O'Malley replaced Boston's former archbishop, Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned in December 2002 over the scandal. Continued...

We travelled to Sri Lanka formerly Ceylon, on Sri Lankan Airlines (which is still a beautiful country). This was an eleven-hour journey, half of which was from Sydney to exit Australia via Port Hedland in Western Australia. We then flew over Indonesia ‘Sumatra’ and passed over Palembang, the scene of the British pacific fleet’s many forays against the Japanese during WW2 where many lives were lost. Flying over that area again gave me an eerie feeling.
I would like to mention that the service we received on Sri Lankan Airlines was superior, and I would not hesitate to fly with them again, they are such delightful people
When we arrived in Colombo (where a general election was imminent), we travelled forty minutes on an ancient, non air-conditioned bus with non-existent shock absorbers to the Pegasus hotel. During this pile-bashing journey, we noticed a large military presence and were advised not to go into Colombo due to the possibility of riots. The air-conditioned hotel was old but clean and presentable. Mary won two bottles of spirits in a hotel raffle, which inspired me to sing a few songs with the hotel band. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay.
Mary and I walked around the local village close to a slow moving river that appeared to be more mud than water. We spoke to some of the local people and watched the local boys play an improvised game of cricket on the dirt road. I was tempted to have a knock with the bat, but because of their expertise, I politely declined their offer when they asked me.
During our journey back to the airport to catch our plane to Gatwick, London, we rode the same tired old bus as before and were stopped no less than a dozen times for security checks. When we arrived in London, I heard that Mrs Bandaranaike, the wife of a former prime minister of Sri Lanka (who was assassinated on 25 September 1959 by a Buddhist monk), had died the day we left, after the election her son had contested.

Two Middle East mothers are sitting in a cafe strip chatting over a plate of tabouli and a pint of goat's milk. The older of the mothers pulls her bag out and starts flipping through photos and they start reminiscing.

"This is my oldest son Mohammed. He would be 24 years old now"

"Yes, I remember him as a baby" says the other mother cheerfully.

"He's a martyr now though" mum confides.

"Oh, so sad dear" says the other.

"And this is my second son Kalid. He would be 21"

"Oh, I remember him," says the other happily, "he had such curly hair when he was born".

"He's a martyr too " says mum quietly.

"Oh, gracious me ...." Says the other.

"And this is my third son. My baby. My beautiful Ahmed. He would be 18", she whispers.

"Yes" says the friend enthusiastically, "I remember when he first started school".

"He's a martyr also," says mum, with tears in her eyes .

After a pause and a deep sigh, the second Muslim mother looks wistfully at the photographs and says ....

"They blow up so fast, don't they?"

Pope working to clean up priesthood By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer
31 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Addressing the clergy sex abuse crisis this week, Pope Benedict XVI said that it was more important to have good priests than many priests.

A top Vatican official now says the Roman Catholic Church is weighing a further change to clean up the clergy: revising church law so predators could be more easily removed.

"It's possible," said Cardinal William Levada, head of the Vatican office that reviews abuse claims against priests worldwide. "There are some things under consideration that I'm not able to say," Levada told reporters Friday, in a meeting at Time magazine's offices.

It is the latest signal during Benedict's first papal visit to the country that he is intent on purifying the priesthood as he affirms traditional Catholic practices and teaching.

He has acknowledged the scourge of abuse in most of his public appearances in the U.S.

He spoke privately with victims — in what is believed to be the first time a pope has met with people who had been abused by priests. He also told bishops the problem had sometimes been very "badly handled" — an indirect but clear papal admonition. Benedict could take up the issue again Saturday in a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral with priests from around the country.

So far, Benedict has offered support to America's clergy during his visit.

He said priests who had done nothing wrong had been unfairly tarred by the crisis. More than 4,000 clergy have been accused of molesting minors in the U.S. since 1950. Abuse-related costs have surpassed $2 billion in that period, with much of the payouts in just the last six years. But most of the recent claims concern wrongdoing that occurred decades ago.

At the height of the scandal, which erupted in 2002 with the case of one predator in the Archdiocese of Boston, the shame was so intense that some priests took off their clergy collars before going out in public. Benedict compared their suffering to "Christ in his Passion."

However, morale has been improving as the intensity of the crisis has eased.

Seminary rectors say that their students are eager to show through their service to parishioners that the priesthood can still be a noble calling.

Yet, Catholic clergy face other challenges beyond fallout from the abuse problem.

The priesthood has been shrinking for decades. More than 3,200 of the 18,600 U.S. parishes don't have resident priests, according to the Center for Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. More lay people than clergy work full-time in the churches.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops created a recruitment campaign called "Fishers of Men," that encourages priests to invite young men to consider entering the priesthood.

Dioceses have been hiring recruiters to travel overseas to find clergy candidates. The number of priests from other countries has grown so steadily that some seminaries are adding English classes, hiring accent reduction tutors and providing courses on American culture.

International recruitment is motivated partly by the exploding demand for Spanish speakers for the Hispanic immigrants filling the pews.

Leading a Mass in Nationals Park in Washington Thursday, Benedict asked the thousands of parishioners who crammed the stadium to "love your priests, and to affirm them in the excellent work that they do."

On Saturday in New York, Benedict will speak to seminarians at a youth rally. Then on Sunday, the final day of his trip, he will visit ground zero and hold a Mass at Yankee Stadium.
