They are simply a product of modern social media. People do both 'chasing for approval' and 'sharing enjoyments' on all social networks.<br /><br />Facebook itself simply capitalises on the consumer market. It relies on advertisement (not unlike almost everything else). Facebook has simply experimented with ways for you to view other advertisements based on comment, image and search history - akin to Google, i.e. Your Blogger posts affect any other advertisement you may view online.<br /><br />In some ways, Facebook has moved far away from its initial implementation of 'catching up with old friends'. In my opinion, its 'news feed', is exactly as the name suggests.
