The RAF had a base on this island that was about one and a half miles by half a mile. Upon entering the base canteen, I heard, “Hello, Mr B.” All I saw was two dark-skinned gents smiling at me. I was speechless. I had only ever
been to Male, the other island close by, but that was three years ago.

“It’s Charlie,” said one of the men. “You remember, the canteen
assistant, HMS Ceylon 1957” How could he forget? I thought, as my
mind flashed back to my job controlling the food stores. After drinking a pint of the best they had on offer and carefully secreting several bottles of plonk in the mailbags, I said goodbye.
Info. Charlie was one of many personel recruited from Goa on the Indian sub cont. Sadly Goa is no more and now part of india. E C: Not exactly pure supposition.
There is the possibility that the A/C may have landed at Gan in the Maldives, Certainly not Male the capital with a diameter of approx one mile in all directions. I visited Male 1957 (HMS Ceylon). Then again 1960 HMS Scarborough to GAN which is a little more than 1.5 miles in length and .5 of a mile wide, at the time used by the RAF and Brit Int Flights. Ideal for present day big birds.

EC, thankyou for your comment.

Excerpt from memoirs to follow soon. re GAN Maldives.Vesthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15390020901033513032noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11610993.post-41990667742378496522014-04-28T09:15:18.383+10:002014-04-28T09:15:18.383+10:00I hope this is fantasy and not yet another example...I hope this is fantasy and not yet another example of the obscene 'collateral damage'.Elephant's Childhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06650565833097914052noreply@blogger.com
